TOBCO announces award of major regional project – NESF Substation – Uralla

 In Civil & Electrical Infrastructure

TOBCO is extremely excited to announce that it has been awarded another significant regional civil project in Uralla NSW undertaking all the civil works for a new 33/330kV substation, as part of Stage 1 at the UPC/AC “New England Solar Farm” project.

The project is being built by Green Light Contractors (GLC), the local subsidiary of Elecnor, a leading Spanish Engineer Procure and Construct (EPC) contractor with extensive experience building solar farms and transmission assets around the world.  TOBCO has been working closely with GLC and UPC/AC to deliver this first major milestone of the project, having almost completed the substantial civil earlyworks and access roads package at the solar farm.

The first stage of the New England Solar Farm (NESF) is a 400MW megawatt solar farm across two separate solar fields near Uralla in the New England region of NSW. Rows of solar panels will be installed on specialised infrastructure that follows the sun, while also allowing adequate space for sheep to continue grazing on the land between and underneath the panels. A 33/33-kV substation and operations and maintenance building will be constructed within the Northern Array area. This is the first stage of what will ultimately be a combined 720MW Solar and 400MWhr Battery at the site.

The project is being built by Green Light Contractors, the local subsidiary of Elecnor, a leading Spanish Engineer Procure and Construct (EPC) contractor with extensive experience building solar farms and transmission assets around the world.

Once fully constructed, the New England Solar Farm, near Uralla, in New South Wales will produce enough energy to power approximately 250,000 typical NSW households each year and will supply energy to the market to help fill the gap left by the expected closure of the Liddell Power Station.

This project will bring significant value to the local community with up to 500 direct construction jobs during the construction period, generating employment opportunities for locals from Uralla and the surrounding region.

UPC\AC Renewables is also planning to install up to a 400MWh lithium-ion battery storage facility, with the first 50MWh, which is supported by the NSW Emerging Energy Program, expected to become operational in mid-2022. This battery system will assist with electricity grid stability and provide firm capability to deliver energy at peak periods, lowering prices for consumers.

TOBCO, was awarded the multimillion dollar NESF Substation contract in June 2021 and have recently commenced works on 15 November 2021.  TOBCO will be constructing the work with its extensive fleet of large machinery utilising GPS control and our highly skilled workforce.

Business owners Sam Turnbull & Glen O’Brien said “TOBCO will deliver the project out of its Northern regional branch located in Armidale NSW.  Since establishing itself in the New England TOBCO has employed 50 locals between this project and its other projects in the New England region.  This project demonstrates TOBCOs diverse capability to deliver not only electrical projects but large scale civil projects.  Our philosophy of self-performing works means we are in a great position to be reactive to our clients’ needs and deliver on time for them.  We are proud to be employing local people and engaging with local contractors and suppliers.  The next step in our journey for our regional branches is to be upskilling local labour and providing more employment opportunities.

We look forward to delivering these critical early works for UPC/AC and GLC and look forward to working with them further over the duration of the project.

The majority of this project will be delivered entirely by TOBCOs own people and plant, reinforcing our capabilities to self-perform projects as a principal contractor.”

TOBCO will provide updates throughout the project and is looking forward to delivering this work for the Greenlight/Elecnor Group.

TOBCO will be working hard in the following years to grow the CIVIL business to ensure it is one of the strong performers in its five core business units.
